Jayne Lewis embodies everything we love at Females in Food. As a ‘brewster’ (yes that’s a real word) she’s one half of the duo making up Two Birds Brewing, a boutique brewery based in Melbourne. Jayne is forging ahead with awesome products and eye-catching branding in what has been, and continues to be, a male dominated industry. Jayne and Danielle, her business partner, are kicking serious goals and making quite a name for themselves with their beers.

We sat down with Jayne to find out what she loves most about what she does and what she would do differently if she had to start all over again…

Q. How would you describe the work that you do?

I have the wonderful job of brewing beer for a living

Q. What do you love about your work?

I love beer in all its forms. Making it, drinking it, all the bits that go into it. The fact that it is a science based genre but has a whole lot of creativity that we can play around with.

Q. What part of your work would you gladly give away?

Writing tasting notes. I hate it.

Q. Who or what has been the biggest influence on your career?

A bit of a combination. No one thing or person. I’ve been lucky to have, even since my first job in wine, really fantastic bosses who’ve taught me so much about production, managing people and I’ve been involved in so many different facets of managing a business. Today with my business partner, Danielle, I manage the direction of the company and make decisions on the beers. My background and influencers have really helped me with that and making decisions on the big picture direction.

Q. If you were starting out in business again today, what advice would you give the younger you?

We’ve been pretty lucky that we haven’t had anything go crazily wrong but perhaps just keep ploughing, keep understanding what you are trying to achieve. Take steps to get there. Be clear on your mission.
